HISTORY & MISSION
In July of 2008, Charissa Puryear began the task of implementing the Granville County Teen Court Program. This would be the first Teen Court program in Judicial Districts 9 and 9b. The implementation of the program included meeting with key stakeholders in the community that included: Juvenile Court Counselors, the County Manager, the Commissioners, Clerk of Court, the Sheriff, the Superintendent, Student Services Director and the Chief District Court Judge. On August 25, 2009 a letter went out across the county announcing this new venture and invited the community to attend informational sessions to learn more about the program. Over the next few months, informational sessions were held, youth and adult volunteers went to observe Person and Wake County Teen Court sessions, and a few new volunteer trainings took place for youth and adults. Before the first case was heard, the program had approximately 74 youth volunteers and 8 adult volunteers actively involved in the program. On Tuesday, November 24, 2009, the first session of Granville County Teen Court was held. Since its inception, this program has grown and continues its efforts to support Granville County youth and their overall success. |
